J. Michael Gatens

J. Michael Gatens, BS, MS, P.Eng.
Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Gatens was formerly Chairman and Advisor at Quicksilver Resources Canada Inc. (QRCI), the wholly owned Canadian subsidiary of Quicksilver Resources Inc. (KWK: NYSE). Mr. Gatens co-founded MGV Energy Inc., the predecessor to QRCI in 1997. MGV was one of Canada’s first developers of natural gas from coal. He is Past-Chairman and Honorary Member of the Canadian Society for Unconventional Gas (CSUG), is on the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) Board of Governors, and the Board of the Petroleum Technology Alliance of Canada (PTAC). Mr. Gatens received the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005 and the Sproule Award for career achievement in unconventional gas in 2006. Mike recently served on the Alberta Government Multi-stakeholder Advisory Committee (MAC) for natural gas from coal development and is an industry second to the Alberta Sustainable Resource Development initiative on multiple land use planning. Mr. Gatens is also a director of the Petroleum Technology Alliance of Canada (PTAC) and PetroGlobe Inc. Prior to starting MGV, Mr. Gatens worked for S.A. Holditch & Associates, leaving as Director and VP of the Eastern U.S. Division. Mr. Gatens received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University and is a registered professional engineer in Texas and a member of APEGGA. He was named a Distinguished Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in 2000, served on the SPE International Board from 1995-97, and has been active on numerous SPE Boards and Committees. Mr. Gatens also served on the Board of the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council (PTTC) from 1994 to 2003. Mike is also on the Board of Alberta Theatre Projects.

In 1984, Kin earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Geophysics from the University of Alberta and his MBA in 1994 from the University of Calgary. Kin started his career at PanCanadian Petroleum as a Geophysicist where he was involved in numerous oil and gas exploration and development programs. He also spent several years in Corporate Planning, Strategic Planning and Commercial Ventures and Land. In 2001, Kin was appointed to the position of New Ventures Manager working primarily on coalbed methane. He led PanCanadian through an important joint venture with MGV Energy (Quicksilver) to secure the industry’s first commercial CBM production in Canada. Kin’s area of responsibility shifted to coalbed methane for Alberta when the PanCanadian and AEC merger formed. In 2003, Kin joined CDX Canada, Co. as the Vice President of New Ventures. CDX later established another milestone with the first commercial horizontal CBM well in Canada. Kin was promoted to Executive Vice-President two years later. Kin led the process to sell CDX’s Canadian assets in 2007. Since then, Kin has accepted the new challenges as President of Unconventional Gas Resources Canada where he continues to work on both conventional exploration and unconventional gas opportunities. In his spare time, Kin volunteers, along with his family, to Operation Christmas Child and Canadian Blood Services.
